Signless, Desireless, Void

The three gateways to enlightenment referred to in Buddhist teachings are the signless, desireless, and void liberations.

Signless liberation: This is achieved by focusing on the impermanence of all things and contemplating their transitory nature. By recognizing that all things are fleeting and changing, the mind is liberated from attachments and becomes signless, meaning free from any designation or concept.

Desireless liberation: This is achieved by contemplating the suffering inherent in all existence and recognizing the ultimate pain and misery that is associated with all things. By doing so, the mind becomes desireless, meaning free from craving and wanting.

Void liberation: This is achieved by meditating on the lack of a self in all things and recognizing the selfless, impersonal nature of existence. By comprehending that there is no permanent self or essence to any being, the mind becomes void, meaning empty of all concepts and dualities.

In all three cases, the enlightenment reached is the same, characterized by freedom from suffering, liberation from the cycle of birth and death, and the attainment of ultimate wisdom and insight.
