If no one answers your call, then you must walk alone! Whose song is that? Nachiketa's. So when no one responds to our call, walking alone becomes both the rule and our destiny. "If no one answers your call, then walk alone!" Nachiketa has reimagined Rabindranath Tagore's song with complete contemporary relevance.
Sometimes you simply have to walk alone. You must keep moving, you must stay alive. You must be well. Not just that—you must also keep yourself well. The amusing thing is, those who abandon you will return when you flourish, when you develop the power to nurture others—they'll come back to share in your wellbeing! Then you cannot turn them away; you'll have to care for them! They never learned to return; they only know how to leave!
So I say, when no one understands us... they don't understand, and they don't understand that they don't understand... when someone leaves us, when no one wants to stay beside us, even then we must preserve ourselves, even then we must keep walking. With unwavering spirit, we must walk alone, we must walk by ourselves!
Remember, if you want to go the farthest in life, you must certainly walk alone. Those who go far in life all walk alone. It's impossible to go very far when you move with a crowd. So being able to walk alone is a great blessing, because when we try to give time to others, we mostly give time to the wrong people. We give time to people who not only serve no purpose in our lives, but who actually slow down our progress. More importantly, these people are harmful to our lives.
We never realize these people are harmful to our lives until the damage is done! Walking alone frees us from this risk. So being able to walk alone is truly a great blessing. Walking alone generates immense strength within the mind, and from that mental strength, we get the time needed to plan for going far. Because then we don't have to give time to so many people. The fewer people we give time to in life, the better we'll be, the more trouble-free we'll remain, the better we can organize ourselves, the farther we can go.
We fall behind in life precisely because we don't give time to ourselves. Give yourself time. Give time to develop yourself, to build yourself. The person who gives time to everyone becomes the most unhappy person in the world, and eventually becomes the most backward person in the world! Remember this very well. So I say, when everyone abandons you, when no one understands you, when no one can accept you as you are, then understand that you must reach such a place that seeing it, those who left you will feel regret.
Those who left will then think, "Who did I abandon? I left such a person?" They'll think exactly such things! Then they'll all want to crowd around you, then they'll want to talk with you, to call you, and they'll be happy if they get your time on the phone. I've seen this happen in my own life. I've had this experience. Those who had abandoned me, who never wanted to give me time, who considered me unworthy—later, in a moment of remorse, they thought, "Who did I consider small? Who did I deem unworthy? Who did I ignore?"
You too should bring yourself to that position, and if you walk alone, if no one stays beside you, then reaching that position becomes easiest for you. Being able to stay and walk alone is a blessing! It's a tremendous opportunity! It's a sign... toward something good! Use this "walk alone" very carefully, and the rest will happen automatically.
