Bengali Poetry (Translated)

Trying to know you

Who are you?
A long-drawn sigh!
An entire birth!
Or an epic poem?

Who are you?
A whole night of burning?
A charred sorrow?
Or a lotus pond brimming with blood-water?

Who are you?
A love almost extinct?
An unfinished short story?
Or a complete novel of separation?

Who are you?
A fixed ambiguity?
A restlessness?
Or a nearly impossible possibility?

Who are you?
A hesitation?
An unease?
Or an indefinable constriction?

Who are you?
A primal desire?
A struggle to remain?
Or a defeated boast?

Who are you?
A lost home?
A free bird?
Or a false promise?

Who are you?
A time of farewell?
A moment of union?
Or an untimely curse?

Trying to know you, I've forgotten myself a thousand times!
Trying to understand you, I can no longer understand myself despite all effort!
Sometimes lover, sometimes beggar—the mirror today tells me nothing definite!
