Once a person has tasted freedom, they can never bring themselves to live in bondage again. A free human being savors the true flavor of life. The enslaved seek to paint their chains with the veneer of liberty, to convince themselves. The subjugated are forever explaining away their own servitude to others—insisting they are content in this captive existence, thriving on the sufferance of another's will. Yet how they resist acknowledging the truth: that they are slaves to another's pleasure! Freedom is such a taste that it shields a person from calamities unforeseen. The largest enslaved population on this earth is woman. And yet they do not know—they have never known—that they live in bondage! They believe this is life itself. But their lives are shackled by the authority and whim of man. In their deepest, unexamined hearts, they waste away in a dependency so complete it feels natural. And yet—even work, even commerce, cannot free them from this vicious circle.
