The Sound of Unsatisfied Footsteps

I never asked you for heaven's bliss,
I only wanted to walk two steps holding your hand;
yet how terribly busy you became!

I never asked you for a royal palace,
I only wanted to be two mouthfuls of rice and lentils from your plate;
yet you slammed the door in my face!

I never wanted to be the crown upon your head,
I only wanted to remain as the apple of your eye;
yet how strangely silent you fell!

I never asked you for an entire monsoon month,
I only wanted to get drenched together on one rain-swept night;
yet the whole rainy season passed, and still you never came!

I never wanted to be your heart,
I only wanted to rest my head a little upon your chest;
yet you never called me close!

I never wanted to be the moon in your sky,
I only wanted to spend one moonlit night together;
yet that evening has never come to our lives!

I never wanted to share in your happiness,
I only wanted to be a little balm for your pain;
yet you never told me what causes you sorrow!

I never wanted to be a storm in your life,
I only wanted to be a passing shower for you;
yet look, you still haven't opened your umbrella!

I never asked you for an entire sky,
I only wanted to be a sliver of sunlight in your sky;
yet you never even showed me your sky!
