The Person of the Heart

Such regret fills me, you know!
Nearly fifty years I've spent in this world,
yet in all this time, I've never found someone
who is completely, utterly mine.

I've found no one even now who will remember with tender care
who I am, what I am, what my true nature was.
Someone who loves me in my own way—
such a person I have not found yet.

But you have found them!
Tell me, what is this soulmate like?
Someone absolutely your own... what are they like?
What is this beloved like?

Do they love with such careful devotion?
Do they know how to love with wild abandon?
Or is their love measured and calculating?
Do they understand what selflessness means?
Do they know how to become completely one's own?
Do they stay close always?
Do they become that vast sky of belonging?
Do they know how to live by clinging to me?
Will they remember... who I am, what my essence is... with infinite tenderness and care?
Will they remember what I meant to them in life?
Do they know how to... shelter and protect?
Do they understand the distance between emotion and reality?
Do they know how to keep themselves well in the sweet bondage
of being yours-and-mine forever?
Do they know how to love... with complete abandon, in their own way?

I wonder, what are they like!
What are these soulmates you speak of so often!
Someone absolutely your own... what is it like when they're real!

Such regret fills me, you know! Such deep regret!
Nearly fifty years I've spent in this world,
yet in all this time, someone who knows how to want me
in my own way—such a person I still haven't found!
