A relationship is not something mechanical. You can't just command it into existence through binary coding—it doesn't work that way. Relationships grow; or rather, you might say, relationships must be cultivated. Big things can break a relationship, but it's the small, subtle things that work most beautifully to build a strong one!
These matters are so delicate that you truly cannot separate them—you cannot pinpoint exactly why a person holds such importance for you. Believe me, if you can separate it out, then you're valuing not the person, but some particular quality of theirs. Once that quality fades, the tide of joy and trust in your relationship will no longer flow. Yet look—even the moon, when given time, experiences its proper ebb in the natural course of things. If you search for qualities instead of human beings, in the end you'll find no human beings at all.
For those who go from person to person searching for someone who fits their ideal, thinking "This time I'll make the relationship permanent"—here's some disappointing news: though in some places, even today, you can buy people, there is nowhere a market for souls. But what's the good news, you ask? Here, on this very earth, each of us has our soul's companion dwelling among us. Learn to give importance to what matters, and one day you too will receive importance, and along with it, you'll be bound in a wonderful relationship!
Then from that relationship, day by day, you too will cross the distance between touch and tender contact; you'll walk beyond belief toward the path of deep trust. One day you too will see that in this life, even when happiness gets trampled underfoot, peace remains here, eternally fresh.
