Bengali Poetry (Translated)

The King and the General

Even after you killed me, here I am, still alive—
can you tell me how?

No, no, you shouldn't be able to answer so quickly.
Of course, I'm in no hurry. Take your time, search for the answer at leisure.
I don't lose patience suddenly like you do. One who loves one-sidedly has no weapon in the battle of survival except patience.
So I'm telling you, never come to test my patience.

Do you know who the king is in chess?
I asked too simple a question, didn't I?
Now, let me ask again...
This time read the question carefully.
Do you know who the king really is in chess?
Didn't get the answer? I knew you wouldn't.

In chess, the only real king is the 'queen.' Surprised?
Come now, can someone who controls only four squares around him ever be king?
But look, the queen can go anywhere, in any direction.
So by that measure, the king is the queen!

In real life too, between two people in love, this same king-and-queen dynamic plays out.
To explain this, I need to go a little deeper. Shall I?

Listen then, all this time I showed you one side of the coin, now let me show the other, how's that?
The king knows perfectly well his power spans only four squares. Yet he keeps that mighty queen under his control. He never lets the queen realize that she too could have been king!
The strategy by which the king keeps the queen subdued—whoever knows this strategy, no one else in the world is worthy of being king.

I didn't confuse you again, did I?
Now tell me, between us, who is the king, and who is the queen?
