Bengali Poetry (Translated)

Our Strange Story

How strange our story is!
Where the story begins and where it ends,
neither you nor I was there!
Yet see—from start to finish,
the whole tale revolves around us two.

In some evening's darkness,
with great hope, together
we lit a lamp.
Why did that very lamp
suddenly spread not light but only smoke—
before I could understand even that much,
I see us on separate paths.
Is this something seen in a dream?
Or something seen when dreams break?

Congratulations, today you belong to someone else.
Congratulations, for not letting me understand the story's end.
You think, the boy is such a fool!
If only you knew, the boy is a fool only to you!

Surely one day
in your new love's affection,
you will manage
to build a world of your own.
That day you'll see—
something's missing, something's gone terribly wrong...
Check again.

Meanwhile, in my empty chest...
whenever evening descends,
I'll remember you fiercely;
still you won't return,
only night will be my companion.
