Bengali Poetry (Translated)

Of living that knows no reprieve

One.

For so long I've been thinking, this time it will be a tremendous love poem!
That poem will wear the dress of a bright red mountain,
seeing that dress you'll go mad and bring a fierce tempest!

That poem's eyes will be enchanting and terrible,
those wide eyes, soaked in a thousand loves, will hurl questions at you,
where were you all this time?
have you only now come to learn how to love?
is it time now for you to return?

Two.

What kind of cunning is this of yours?
Every time I leave in vain,
you turn me back again!
Every time I curse and condemn,
you call me close, just that many times!

How do you burn me like this?
Every time I say I want you closer,
you say there's no room left.
Every time I say, then shall I leave?
Each time you say, I'm so afraid!

What kind of fire have you cast me into?
Every time I say I'll fight this through,
you ask, why? who am I to you?
Every time I say the war is over,
you say, I'm still here, aren't I!

Three.

So you too have made a household at last!
You understand quite well, this isn't a home,
here there's only the clatter of dirty dishes!

Didn't you promise to show me?
Now why don't you first see for yourself,
which sense of justice you'll choose!

You've said it roundabout every day,
who keeps track of what's inside?
As if I've come begging for rice,
will you chase me away? Who's the master here?

Still, this mistake is quite logical!
You spat at me, yet how strange,
the thorn pierced your own flesh...how's that!

Who was it that spoke first...I'll show you?
Who gave the promise, see, take stock,
how shall I arrange it all just right?

Now the puppet show is going quite well!
The race of hurling pots and pans continues, doesn't it?
So now you understand, this is what they call a household!

Sit and think at least once a day—
I can't manage this, I'll give up this time!
Whatever happens, let it happen now!
This time I really will leave this house!
