Bengali Poetry (Translated)

Ocean of Nectar

You'll laugh when you hear me speak, I know.
You'll think I'm nothing but a perfect fool!
Still, don't leave without listening—wait a moment.

Let me tell an old story today!
Let me say what love is.
Perhaps you know without believing...
Love is not merely a word.
It's a living presence that speaks each day,
that teaches us to live as completely different beings.

The victory that comes through love
is utterly different.
Like the proud warrior who laughs with swollen chest after battle,
the victory for which people grow desperate and count their own lives worthless,
winning through love is no less than that!
In that victory this life and all externals can be torn away so easily!
Flinging away all desires, one can burn daily in love's fire!

Many fall in love,
but how many find someone worthy of their love?
Only one who knows how to live keeping love above all else
truly understands what love is!

This one love gives strength and keeps us awake, keeps us alive!
Setting aside the beggar's life, it draws detachment to the heart.
Leaving all that pulls us back,
love itself teaches us to walk that distant, unknown path.
The brave soul who wraps himself in love's garment for ages,
his roots are not easily uprooted!
Those roots are deeply entwined with Earth-mother's very womb!

Don't ever tell me to turn back,
rather come yourselves into this truth of all existence.
Uproot the chains of arm-clasping, sweaty toil,
shake off false attachments, wipe away all cunning from that body,
wash and scrub from your breast all the black bloodstains!

Know this—on the path of light, the traveler never loses his way,
for that very light shows the traveler his path!
If you cannot embrace me,
then don't ever bind me in false attachments!
I'll drown alone in love's nectar-ocean!
