Bengali Poetry (Translated)

Looking Down the Road

How easily I forget everyone else,
yet I cannot forget you!

For your aging cheeks, millions upon millions of kisses
cry out, watching the road in yearning…
yet they cannot reach you.

This longing to run my fingers through your soft hair—
this weary night never ends…
Just once, the desire to drink you in with my eyes
burns me alive!

Where are you, how are you…
have you forgotten…I don't know!
This shameless body wants only you—
these lips want you, these breasts crave the honey-touch of your mouth!

Call me ugly, antisocial, ruined…whatever you will—
I only know this: I love you, love you, love you!

Is this love, or merely desire?
Is this all I've ever wanted then!
You don't know…
I wanted you to be happy.
Even pushing me away…be happy!

Did your wife get angry?
Did she find out…that you were mine…even a little!
Do you love her so much
that you denied me, and
so easily said you never loved me at all?

I don't know, I know nothing at all!
I only know I am yours!
Everything I am is for you alone!

That you never loved me—I cannot believe this;
just as I cannot believe you love me still today.
