Bengali Poetry (Translated)

Light

- Tell me, what will happen after I'm gone? Like everyone else, at day's end, will you forget me too? Will you quickly reach for someone else's hand?
- You cannot go anywhere before me! Are all my prayers then in vain? Whose hand would I even want to hold? I don't have such desires!
- Who goes before whom, how can we know! Still I'm afraid, I worry. Whatever happens, at least keep my name alive in your heart?
- Why do you think me so heartless, tell me? Why bring up such things in this sweet twilight hour?
- The world has grown so small, all lights are dimming now, everyone drifting away in their own fashion...can't you see all this?
- Everything will be alright, one day everyone will come together again. I'll make you understand too, what you owe me, every bit of it!
- Where do you find such courage even in these dark times? Who gives you so much hope? Have you suddenly gone mad?
- Say what you will! But rest assured, the world will awaken again, kadamba will bloom in the rains, you'll gather flowers, pout in mock anger—so much more yet to see!
- Alright, I accept. Then I too will learn to smile that old smile again, those forgotten paintings...let me paint them once more in new colors!
- Yes, go then, my beloved. Don't forget to color yourself anew! You and I will meet again. Together we'll spend so many more evenings drenched in tenderness yet to come! Come now, shall I hang up the phone?
