What's the use of scrubbing your house till it gleams and sparkles, if your home outshines you? Before tidying your house, tidy your mind. Life is brief—live it joyfully without all that needless suffering! Keep your home just tidy enough, as much as you need. What does it matter what people say if you're happy? Use the time you save to organize your mind instead... Paint a picture, write a poem, cook something new, take a trip with a friend... do what your heart tells you... do it before it's too late. Cook whatever you want, tend a garden; drink... smoke or wine, whatever pleases you. Swim, climb mountains, run with dogs, listen to music, read books... Lose yourself in conversations with friends... when life ends, it all ends anyway! Your own peace of mind matters more than the approval in others' eyes. Don't ever lose anything trying to give to those who give nothing in return. Don't murder so much time arranging your house, clothes, and furniture that you have no time left to know life itself. The days that pass never come back again. Too organized, too neat, too spotless... If you spend your life this way, know this: When age creeps in and your strength and energy slowly ebb, you'll find that when your body can't keep up with all that work, your mind will only fret with this thought... Something's missing... everything's a mess... why can't I get anything organized! Better to prepare your mind... let it learn to accept everything... even if life's accompaniments become messy under time's demands. The day I leave this world... what will remain but dust and ashes anyway! Better to let some dust settle and save some time. No one will remember who you fed where, or whose bills you paid! Who would be foolish enough to cherish memories of your spotless house? People remember instead how much comfort they found in your friendship, how much lighter they felt in your company, how much your presence taught them about living—these things, and nothing more.
