Bengali Poetry (Translated)

Happy Birthday

How many years I've sat waiting for you—
I can't even remember anymore!
The fragrance of a thousand roses has suddenly
intoxicated this morning!
In the dawn sun's eyes today, an ocean of wonder!

In the sound of your coming, the mantras of offering
are being chanted today!
Autumn kash flowers laugh at spring's doorway
in different dress…
In the blood-red of krishnachura today,
there is only you!

All conflicts have crossed today
the thresholds of sulking, one by one!
O my beloved sorrow,
you are my sky where I have no right
to fly!

On this sacred day when I would welcome you with love—
I have no such wealth in this leaf-hut!
Beloved, I am so helpless, so incapable…

Yet…from this distance I send
my soul-churned prayer of love.
I bow to your red feet…
the feet that will walk countless paths
without weariness!

May I remain absorbed, enchanted in you…
in this life, the next, in hundreds of lives!
Keep me indebted to you until death!
—Placing this small plea at your feet, I say:
because you came on this day, I too have come!
