Bengali Poetry (Translated)

Forgetting is life

Our sky…
suddenly split in two, somehow!
Perhaps you wanted only that bit of blue,
while I yearned for rainbows, with a fragment of spring cloud.
Tell me truly, how much were you ever mine?
As much as you claimed? Or as much as I imagined taking?
Were you ever anything of mine at all?

How much I managed to become yours,
let that remain unknown!
How much you managed to become mine—
that question lingers still…

I learned that sunlight too holds warmth—so private!
I learned that clouds too carry droplets—hidden, they too!
Gathering some happiness from those clouds' pathways,
I too released it gently, with such care!

If you can, from the water hidden behind those clouds
anoint yourself with some of that moisture!
See, there you may not catch my scent,
yet you'll find some private teardrops,
which I had concealed in the clouds' embrace.

So what if you don't remain mine in this life,
so what if abandoning a piece of sky we two ran
to opposite ends, scattering and spreading
all our unspoken words,
so what if we couldn't walk this time hand in hand,
so what if keeping love hidden made this corner of the heart heavy!

Whatever you gave,
however much you remained across the entirety of my existence—infinite even that!
How shall I express this gratitude today!
Nothing was wrong with what I received,
everything I gave was truly my own,
if only I could have become worthy of what I gained,
if only I could have journeyed making this my life's final treasure,
then victory would truly have been mine!

I know victory will still be mine,
at its root lies written
the unbroken script of an unwritten defeat…
Perhaps in some other time,
on some other path...we two will walk again.
That day we'll have our private sky again,
laughter and tears under just one roof,
perhaps there'll be some unwritten covenant!

If not, so be it! When life is…
then what's the mistake in that?
Mistake is life, mistake is truth!
