Bonsai of Thoughts: One Hundred Seventy-Three

should never fall in love.

then begin anew—
this is life's secret.

4. The wise remain wise even when they drink wine;
the foolish remain foolish even when they drink milk.

5. Don't force yourself to think of someone as a brother who doesn't think of you as a sister. If you do, you'll only be disappointed.

6. Two paths lie before you:
to truly become a hero, or to merely think yourself one.

7. The more I see deceivers prosper,
the more my faith in fate grows.

8. You praise me so lavishly—
what terrible harm have I done you?

9. What someone can buy with money,
even if you give it to them for free,
don't expect love in return.

10. Nothing brings greater peace than sleeping beside your beloved every night.

11. We demand justice for only two kinds of crimes:
those that brought me no personal gain,
and those not committed by someone I favor.

12. What can be done for money
costs far more when attempted without it.

13. Pride comes before a fall.
...This saying is repeated most often
by those who have little in life worth being proud of.

14. Only when watching pornography
do people find happiness in others' pleasure.

15. People rail loudest against
the very transgressions that bring them no joy.

16. Those who truly quit their jobs
never quit them every single day.

17. Every office has that one person:
a busybody in others' affairs, worthless in their own.

18. A successful man never encounters another successful man
whom he'd be willing to marry, were that man a woman instead.

19. Constantly eyeing others' wallets
will never make your own grow heavy.

20. To fry an egg,
you must first break it.
