Bonsai of Thoughts (Translated)

Bonsai of Thoughts: One Hundred Fifty-Five

1. The more punishment I've received,
the more I've learned to forgive.

2. Such a long acquaintance,
yet each day brings new acquaintance still!

3. How poor this man is! How poor!
Nothing but a single coin to his name!

4. May beautiful clothes
upon this body
find their place
before death claims me!

5. Some fall in love,
some make love.

6. : In what color do you paint your beloved?
: Rather ask, in what color do I not paint her!

7. When will you move away
from this gaze again?
Only when I move you away myself!

8. Even in prayer I think of you!
Is this very thought then my prayer?

9. Life is on leave,
so death has no leisure!

10. Sitting on shore, drinking wine;
seeing and not seeing...
boats pass by with sails unfurled.

11. Eye to eye
with time,
time passes
measuring time.

12. One who befriends solitude—
the city still asks him...
which side are you on?

13. When the wine runs dry
only broken goblets remain;
then though you call a hundred times,
the cupbearer won't return, not even by mistake!

14. Beloved, shake the sorrow from your heart,
so that even in your unconscious
my love won't be rejected!

15. When the lamp burns fearfully,
the wind blows considerately.

16. When there's no simplicity in the heart,
what's the point of pretending simplicity to gather praise?

17. If you move away
seeing my sorrow,
then in what melody
do you love me?

18. Had I known this day would come,
would I have brought that day, even by mistake?

19. Life is beautiful
because you exist!
Without you,
even longevity would be meaningless!

20. How do I console that heart of mine
which knows
it never won your heart!
