Bonsai of Thoughts (Translated)

Bonsai of Thought: Ninety-Five

1. From these dark seas,
from each frozen hell
emerges...the gleam of spring.

2. Back to back with the ocean,
mingling with shells,
petals lose themselves pearl by pearl.

3. Rivers gather
the ceaseless rain...from cool springs
to offer oblation to the sea.

4. Doors wrought of branch and leaf,
hinges fashioned grass by grass;
even their lock, slowly snails are making.

5. Wind-blown, rain-bathed...
humble grass, tender and soft;
there I remain...waiting for you.

6. The old cat wakes from sleep,
yawns and stretches,
looks around searching...where is love!

7. White clouds of mist,
whiter still above them,
below the grey body of hills.

8. Listen! My little cottage
I've just built with fresh straw!
Come here, to swoon in happiness's wound!

9. On the city's streets,
in meditation upon earth's fragrance,
even strangers' eyes hold shadows of friends...

10. Look, look...don't you see!
What shall I see?
Nothing...sleep!

11. Dance of green shadows...
Look how our green...
turns grey, dancing, dancing...

12. Wait...wait! Don't touch the rose!
Just saying this, thinking something...my friend
plucked all the roses from the tree and gave them to me!

13. Twilight slowly walks toward evening...
A sharp whistle sounds in the distance...
Body by body, solitary darkness deepens...

14. Reading from holy scripture...
Not letters, only the heart trembles!
Trying to wake God, how strangely one awakens!

15. So many sacred nights,
new white moon, we watch amazed—
all memory of noon has vanished!

16. With that pen...
which tends my soul,
I always write.

17. On the soul's wings
birds of free thought
soar high, writing comes.

18. Far away, so far away...
though you exist,
I find you in this word, this silence.

19. Enter the song,
where soul meets soul,
hidden spirit...

20. O life, awaken!
Place in this hand with deep breath
pen or pencil.
