A Pair of Dreams Dreaming

 
Give me nothing else if you will, but grant me a pair of dreams.
All my wounded hours pass alone...
With a pair of dreams you've given, painted on these eyes,
if you must give me that final sleep, I'll go to it with peace in my chest.


Do you know how many kisses I press upon your reddened feet in dreams?
How I sit there still, resting my face upon your knees—do you know this?


Drawing you into this chest, hiding your face, how many hundred times I've traced
that small white moon upon your forehead... have you ever sensed it in sleep's haze?


Sometimes between words, I've settled in the crease of your knees—have you noticed?
When you've raised your voice, sung in that classical mode, touching each of your words,
tenderly weaving them into my heart all the while—did you ever keep count?


With throat-deep thirst, in wounded pride... through how many nights
have I surrendered myself to you—have you known, even by mistake?
In the gentle touch of your hands, in the play of drowsy sweet sunlight,
how carelessly my sleep has broken—could you feel it?


When you drift away... absorbed in the realm of deep sleep,
I, between a world of tasks... casting my gaze upon your lips, your cheeks, your eyes,
piercing through heart, would fade away completely!... could you see me then?


When you're deeply busy with your sketching, not looking right or left,
then slowly coming... without breaking your meditation,
I'd leave the coffee mug right there... beside your brush.
Even in such concentration, would you hear... the sound of my footsteps?


When you're sinking into tenderness, then threading your hair through my fingers,
burying my nose... I'd breathe you in! Did you ever notice?


These two eyes are lost only in dreams of you!
Won't you bring me... buy me such a pair of dreams!
